The Dandruff Cycle: Why It Keeps Coming Back — And How to Finally Break It

Dandruff isn't a one-time problem. For most people it's a recurring loop — and your current shampoo may be the thing keeping it running. 

You've tried the blue bottle. The green bottle. The medicated one your dermatologist recommended. For a week or two, the flakes disappear. And then — sometimes gradually, sometimes all at once — they come back. Sometimes worse than before.

This experience is so common it has a name in dermatology: the dandruff rebound cycle. Understanding why it happens is the first step to actually stopping it.

What Dandruff Actually Is

Dandruff — medically known as seborrheic dermatitis of the scalp — is not caused by dry skin, as many people believe. It is caused by an overgrowth of a naturally occurring yeast called Malassezia globosa, which lives on the scalp of virtually every adult human being.

Malassezia feeds on scalp sebum (oil) and produces a byproduct called oleic acid. In individuals whose scalps are sensitive to oleic acid, this triggers an immune response: the scalp accelerates its skin cell turnover rate from the normal 30 days to as few as 7 days. The result is the visible white or yellowish flakes we recognise as dandruff — clumps of incompletely shed scalp cells.

The itching is the scalp's inflammatory response to the Malassezia overgrowth — the body trying to fight something it has identified as a threat.

Phase 1: The Flare

The dandruff cycle typically begins with a trigger — something that disrupts the scalp's microbiome balance and allows Malassezia to proliferate:

       Seasonal change — particularly the transition from dry winter air to humid monsoon conditions, which creates ideal growth conditions for Malassezia

       Stress — cortisol suppresses immune function and increases sebum production, both of which favour Malassezia overgrowth

       Diet changes — a sudden increase in sugar or refined carbohydrate intake has been linked to flares, possibly because it increases the lipid content of sebum

       Hair care product change — introducing a new shampoo, conditioner, or styling product that disrupts the scalp's pH or microbiome

       Increased scalp oiliness — whether from hormonal changes, seasonal factors, or increased stress-related sebum production

Phase 2: The Stripping

The instinctive response to a dandruff flare is to reach for a medicated or anti-dandruff shampoo and wash more frequently. This addresses the symptom — the flakes temporarily reduce — but often sets up the second phase of the cycle.

Most conventional anti-dandruff shampoos use one of two active ingredients: zinc pyrithione or ketoconazole. Both are effective at killing Malassezia. But the formulas they're delivered in are typically sulphate-heavy, high-pH, and highly stripping.

What happens to a scalp that's been stripped of its natural oils and its acid mantle?

       It produces more sebum to compensate — feeding the Malassezia more

       The scalp becomes irritated and inflamed from the stripping — worsening the existing inflammatory response

The dandruff temporarily improves because the antifungal has reduced Malassezia. But the stripping has created ideal conditions for Malassezia to return — often more aggressively.

Phase 3: The Rebound

Two to four weeks after the medicated shampoo seemed to work, the flakes return. Sometimes the dermatologist recommends switching to a different active — selenium sulphide, or a coal tar formula. These work, and then the rebound happens again.

This is the dandruff cycle. It continues until one of two things changes: either the underlying scalp environment is addressed rather than just the Malassezia population, or the cycle is broken by a formula that fights dandruff without creating the conditions for its return.

Breaking the Cycle: The Scalp Environment Approach

The evidence-based way to break the dandruff cycle is to focus on the scalp environment rather than just the fungal population. Malassezia will always be present on the human scalp — the goal is not to eliminate it but to create conditions where it cannot overpopulate.

The three conditions that keep Malassezia in check:

       Correct scalp pH (4.5–5.5): Malassezia thrives in neutral to slightly alkaline conditions. A shampoo that maintains the scalp's natural acidity denies it the pH environment it needs to proliferate

       Balanced sebum production: Washing with a non-stripping formula means the scalp doesn't overproduce oil to compensate, reducing the food supply available to Malassezia

       Healthy scalp microbiome: A diverse scalp microbiome includes beneficial bacteria and yeasts that naturally compete with Malassezia. Harsh antifungal shampoos used long-term can disrupt the entire microbiome, reducing this natural competition

The Role of Botanical Antimicrobials

Several plant-derived ingredients have documented antimicrobial activity against Malassezia without the scalp-stripping side effects of pharmaceutical antifungals:

       Rosemary Extract (Rosmarinus officinalis): The ursolic acid and rosmarinic acid in rosemary extract have demonstrated inhibitory effects against Malassezia in multiple in vitro studies. Used consistently in a shampoo, it provides ongoing antimicrobial support without disrupting the broader scalp microbiome

       Coconut Oil (Cocos nucifera): Lauric acid, the primary fatty acid in coconut oil, has well-documented antifungal properties. A 2007 study found coconut oil effective against Candida species, and similar mechanisms apply to Malassezia

       Tea Tree Oil (Melaleuca alternifolia): Not in Reytha's current formula but worth mentioning as a well-researched botanical antifungal for scalp use

The key difference between these botanical actives and pharmaceutical antifungals is not necessarily efficacy — it's spectrum. Botanical antimicrobials tend to be broader-spectrum with less disruption to the overall microbiome, making them more suitable for long-term maintenance use.

The Washing Frequency Question

A common piece of advice for dandruff is to wash hair less frequently to avoid stripping. This is correct for some dandruff scenarios but wrong for others.

If your dandruff is driven by oily scalp and Malassezia overgrowth, less frequent washing can worsen it — because longer intervals between washes mean more sebum accumulating on the scalp, more food for Malassezia, and more opportunity for the microbiome to tip out of balance.

The correct guidance depends on your scalp type:

       Oily scalp with dandruff: wash every 2–3 days with a sulphate-free formula that doesn't trigger rebound oiliness

       Dry scalp with flaking (often mistaken for dandruff): wash 2–3 times per week maximum; focus on deep scalp hydration

       Normal scalp with periodic dandruff flares: maintain a consistent washing routine; don't dramatically change frequency during flares

The Long Game

Breaking the dandruff cycle is not a two-week project. The scalp microbiome takes 4–8 weeks to re-establish balance after a disruption. Any new routine needs at least 6 weeks of consistent use before you can evaluate whether it's working.

The most common mistake: switching products the moment dandruff persists into week two or three of a new shampoo. This perpetuates exactly the instability that allows the cycle to continue.
