Hair Oiling: India's Most Beloved Hair Care Ritual — Explained by Science

Every Indian grew up with hair oiling. But what does it actually do — to the scalp, to the shaft, to the follicle? The science is more interesting than the tradition.

Few hair care rituals are as deeply embedded in Indian culture as champi — the hair oiling and scalp massage tradition that spans every region, religion, and generation. Whether it was your mother, your grandmother, or a barber on the roadside, the experience of warm oil worked into the scalp is one of the most universally shared sensory memories in India.

It is also one of the most scientifically misunderstood. Most people who do it do it because they were told it works. Most people who don't do it have stopped because someone told them it causes dandruff. Neither camp fully understands what oiling does and doesn't do — or when and how it actually helps.

Sesame Oil: For warmth and antioxidant protection

The traditional base oil in Ayurvedic hair formulations. Sesame oil contains sesamol and sesaminol — lignin-derived antioxidants that protect the oil itself from going rancid and provide antioxidant protection to the scalp skin.
