Building a Chemical-Free Home Care Routine: The Room-by-Room Guide for Indian Households
We've spent years cleaning up what goes on our bodies. It's time to clean up what we clean our homes with.
Most Indian households have made significant progress on personal care. We read shampoo labels. We look for sulphate-free. We've tried switching to natural skin care. But then we go to the kitchen cabinet and pull out a surface cleaner loaded with sodium hypochlorite, synthetic fragrances, and chemical thickeners. We spray it on every surface our family touches — the dining table, the kitchen counter, the bathroom sink — and think nothing of it.
The surfaces in your home absorb what you put on them. The air carries what you spray into it. And the standard household cleaning products available in India today are, in many cases, as chemically intensive as the personal care products we've been working to move away from.
Here's a room-by-room approach to a cleaner, plant-powered home care routine — without compromising on effectiveness.
Kitchen: The Most Important Room to Get Right
The kitchen surfaces are where food is prepared, where children eat, and where contamination matters most. The challenge: you need real antimicrobial power — but many conventional kitchen cleaners use formaldehyde, triclosan (banned in several countries as an endocrine disruptor), and synthetic solvents that linger on surfaces.
• Counter surfaces: White vinegar diluted 1:1 with water is a documented antibacterial agent effective against E. coli and Salmonella. Add 10 drops of tea tree essential oil per 250ml for enhanced antimicrobial action.
• Dishes: Look for plant-based dish soaps using surfactants derived from corn or coconut (sodium cocoyl glutamate, decyl glucoside) rather than petroleum-derived surfactants. They clean just as effectively and rinse cleaner.
• Refrigerator: Bicarbonate of soda (baking soda) in water deodorises and gently cleans without the harsh chemicals that can contaminate food surfaces.
• Drain cleaning: Baking soda followed by white vinegar and hot water — the chemical reaction loosens grease buildup without the corrosive sodium hydroxide in most commercial drain cleaners.
Bathroom: Tackling Limescale and Soap Scum the Plant Way
Indian bathrooms face hard water limescale deposits — the same mineral problem that damages hair (calcium carbonate deposits from hard water). The good news: the same chemistry that fights limescale on hair (acid chelation) works on bathroom surfaces.
• Tile and tap limescale: Undiluted white vinegar left for 10–15 minutes dissolves calcium carbonate deposits effectively. For stubborn buildup, a paste of cream of tartar and lemon juice works as a gentle abrasive.
• Toilet: Citric acid powder dissolved in hot water (about 100g per litre) is one of the most effective limescale removers available — and citric acid is a plant-derived compound (originally from citrus fruits).
• Soap scum: Plant-based castile soap mixed with baking soda creates a gentle scrubbing paste that dissolves soap residue without scratching surfaces.
Living Room and Floors: Dust and Allergens
Indian homes deal with significant dust and particulate matter — especially in urban areas. Most conventional floor cleaners use synthetic preservatives, artificial fragrances, and chemical antibacterials that are inhaled by children playing on floors.
• Mopping: A few drops of tea tree oil and neem oil in warm water creates a naturally antibacterial floor wash suitable for most Indian flooring — marble, tiles, and engineered wood.
• Glass and surfaces: A mixture of white vinegar and water (1:2) with a drop of dish soap gives streak-free glass cleaning without the ammonia or synthetic solvents in commercial window cleaners.
• Air freshening: Rather than synthetic air fresheners (which release VOCs — volatile organic compounds — linked to respiratory irritation), use diffused essential oils or simmer citrus peel, cinnamon sticks, and cloves in water on the stovetop.
Laundry: India's Biggest Plant-Based Opportunity
Laundry detergents are among the most chemically complex consumer products in any Indian home. Optical brighteners, synthetic fragrances, phosphates, and bleaching agents are standard in most brands.
• Look for detergents using plant-derived surfactants (sodium cocoate, lauryl glucoside) and enzyme-based stain removal rather than bleach
• For baby clothes specifically, fragrance-free, enzyme-only detergents are the safest choice given infant skin's permeability
• Sodium percarbonate (oxygen bleach) is a plant-compatible whitening agent that decomposes into water and oxygen — unlike chlorine bleach which leaves toxic chlorine compounds as residue
The Ingredients to Avoid in Home Care Products
• Triclosan and triclocarban — antimicrobials banned or restricted in several countries due to endocrine disruption concerns
• Synthetic musks (galaxolide, tonalide) — persistent artificial fragrances that accumulate in body fat and have been detected in human breast milk
• Phosphates — water pollutants that cause algal blooms in waterways; many Indian states have restrictions but enforcement varies
• Chlorine bleach (sodium hypochlorite) for general use — highly corrosive, creates chloramines when mixed with ammonia (a combination that causes severe respiratory irritation)
