The Natural Laundry Guide for Indian Homes: What's in Your Detergent — And Why It Matters for Your Skin
The most skin-contact product in your home is not your moisturiser or your shampoo. It's the detergent residue left in your clothes after every wash. Here's what to do about it.
Think about how much time your skin spends in contact with your clothing. Twelve to sixteen hours a day. Every day. The fabric against your skin is covered in whatever was left behind by the last wash — detergent residue, optical brighteners, synthetic fragrances, and bleaching agents that didn't rinse completely out.
For most people, this is a completely unconsidered variable in their skin health. They read every ingredient on their moisturiser, switch to a gentle shampoo, and then wash all their clothes in a detergent containing compounds that sit against their skin all day.
For people with sensitive skin, eczema, dermatitis, or skin allergies — and the rates of these conditions are rising across urban India — laundry detergent is frequently an unidentified trigger. Here's what's in most Indian laundry detergents, what it's doing to your skin, and how to choose better.

What's in Most Indian Laundry Detergents
Anionic Surfactants (Linear Alkylbenzene Sulphonates — LAS)
The primary cleaning agent in most Indian laundry powder and liquid detergents. LAS is effective, inexpensive, and widely used. It is also a skin irritant at the concentrations used in laundry products — and while most of it rinses out during the rinse cycle, residue remains in fabric, particularly in hard water areas where rinsing is less efficient.
LAS residue in clothing is one of the most common causes of contact dermatitis from laundry products — presenting as diffuse itching, redness, or rash in areas of fabric contact (trunk, inner arms, wherever clothes fit closely).
Optical Brighteners (Fluorescent Whitening Agents — FWA)
Optical brighteners make white clothes appear whiter by absorbing UV light and re-emitting it as blue-white visible light — creating the illusion of greater whiteness. They do not clean. They remain in the fabric after washing — by design, because their effect is lost if they wash out.
The consequence: your skin is in constant contact with fluorescent chemical compounds that are specifically designed to stay in fabric. Optical brighteners are among the most common causes of photodermatitis (sun-triggered skin rash) in individuals with sensitive skin — because UV exposure activates the fluorescent compounds sitting on the fabric against the skin.
Synthetic Fragrances
The characteristic 'fresh laundry' smell is not cleanliness — it is synthetic fragrance compounds (musk fragrances, citrus compounds, floral aldehydes) deposited on fabric during washing. These fragrances are specifically engineered to linger — to persist through wearing and to re-release on the skin throughout the day.
Fragrance compounds are the most common cause of allergic contact dermatitis from laundry products. The European Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety (SCCS) has flagged multiple laundry fragrance compounds as skin sensitisers — meaning they can cause sensitisation that makes the reaction worse with each subsequent exposure.
Chlorine-Based Bleach (Sodium Hypochlorite)
Used in whitening products and fabric sanitisers. Chlorine bleach is highly corrosive to fabric fibres and to skin at high concentrations. At laundry concentrations, it can still cause skin irritation for sensitive individuals through fabric residue, particularly when combined with sweat and heat during exercise or in summer.
Who Is Most at Risk from Detergent Skin Effects
• People with eczema (atopic dermatitis): The skin barrier is already compromised — detergent residue penetrates more easily and triggers inflammatory responses more readily
• Infants and young children: Thinner, more permeable skin and a developing immune system make them more susceptible to contact sensitisation. Baby clothing should always be washed separately in the gentlest available detergent
• People with occupational hand exposure to cleaning products: If your skin is already sensitised to cleaning surfactants at work, laundry detergent residue in clothing compounds the exposure
• People in hard water areas: Hard water reduces rinsing efficiency, leaving more detergent residue in fabric. Most Indian cities have hard water — this is a widespread issue
What to Look for in a Gentler Laundry Detergent
Plant-derived surfactants
Look for detergents using surfactants derived from plant sources rather than petroleum:
• Sodium cocoate (from coconut oil): Effective at lower wash temperatures and gentler on skin than petroleum-derived LAS
• Sodium lauryl glucose carboxylate: A mild, amino acid-based surfactant used in sensitive skin formulations
• Alkyl polyglucosides (APG): Sugar-derived surfactants that are readily biodegradable and have a very good skin tolerability profile
Fragrance-free or naturally fragranced
Fragrance-free laundry detergents are the safest choice for sensitive skin. If fragrance is important, look for products using naturally derived essential oils (which are still potential sensitisers but generally at lower risk than synthetic musks and aldehydes) and ensure they are listed specifically on the label rather than hidden under 'parfum'.
Free from optical brighteners
Products labelled 'free from optical brighteners' or 'free from fluorescent whitening agents' reduce the skin-contact exposure to these persistent compounds. Clothes may look slightly less artificially bright — but your skin won't be in contact with fluorescent chemicals all day.
Enzyme-based formulas
Enzyme-based detergents (proteases, amylases, lipases, cellulases) work at lower temperatures and with lower surfactant concentrations than conventional detergents — meaning less chemical residue in fabric for the same level of cleaning. They are particularly effective on protein-based stains (food, sweat) which are the primary staining challenge in Indian laundry.
Practical Steps for Gentler Laundry in Indian Conditions
• Add an extra rinse cycle: Modern washing machines allow this — an extra rinse removes significantly more detergent residue from fabric, particularly in hard water
• Use less detergent than the recommended dose: Most people use 2–3 times more detergent than necessary. More detergent means more residue. The recommended dose on the packaging is the maximum, not the target
• Wash at lower temperatures: Hot water activates bleach more aggressively and can bond some fragrance compounds to fabric more strongly. Cold or warm water washing is gentler on both fabric and residual skin exposure
• Wash baby clothes separately and with the gentlest available detergent
• Air dry in sunlight where possible: UV exposure helps break down some chemical residues in fabric, and line-dried clothes naturally have less fragrance residue than tumble-dried clothes
