Aloe vera has been cultivated in India for thousands of years. It grows wild across Rajasthan, Gujarat, and the Deccan. Its gel has been used in Ayurvedic medicine for burns, wounds, digestion, and skin conditions for centuries. It's so familiar, so available, and so cheap that it's almost impossible to take seriously as a premium hair care ingredient.

The Chemistry of Aloe Vera: What's Actually Inside
The gel of Aloe barbadensis (the species used in cosmetics) contains:
• Polysaccharides (primarily acemannan): Large sugar molecules that form a protective, moisture-retaining film on both skin and hair surfaces. Acemannan is also a known immunomodulator — it modulates the immune response, which is why aloe soothes inflammation
• Vitamins A, C, and E: Three of the most important antioxidants in skin and scalp biology. Vitamin C is cofactor in collagen synthesis; Vitamin E protects lipid membranes from oxidative damage; Vitamin A (as beta-carotene) supports cell turnover
• Vitamin B12 and Folic Acid: Two B vitamins important for hair follicle cell division and growth
• Enzymes (bradykinase, aliiase, alkaline phosphatase): Bradykinase reduces inflammation by breaking down bradykinin, the peptide responsible for inflammatory pain and swelling. Applied to the scalp, this means real, measurable anti-inflammatory action

What Aloe Vera Does to the Scalp
1. Reduces Inflammation
The scalp is skin — and like skin everywhere on the body, it can become inflamed. Scalp inflammation is a root cause of both dandruff and hairfall. The enzyme bradykinase in aloe vera has been clinically shown to reduce inflammation by breaking down the inflammatory peptide bradykinin on contact. For a scalp that's chronically irritated — from sulphate shampoos, pollution, stress, or dandruff — this anti-inflammatory action is genuinely therapeutic.

What Aloe Vera Does to the Hair Shaft
When aloe vera contacts the hair shaft during washing, several things happen:
• The acemannan polysaccharides coat the hair cuticle with a lightweight film that reduces friction between strands — improving slip and making detangling easier
• The amino acids in aloe temporarily fill gaps and damage sites in the hair's protein structure — giving hair a smoother surface and adding temporary strength

Raw Aloe Vera vs. Aloe Vera Extract in Formulas
Many people apply raw aloe vera gel from the plant directly to their hair — and this works, to a degree. But there are important differences between raw gel and the processed extract used in professional formulations:
• Stability: Raw aloe gel oxidises and degrades rapidly after extraction. The enzymes that make it effective begin breaking down within hours. Processed extract uses stabilisation methods that preserve the active compounds over the product's shelf life
• Concentration: Formulators can standardise the concentration of active compounds (particularly acemannan) in processed extract, ensuring consistent performance. Raw gel concentration varies by plant, season, and extraction method
• Purity: The raw gel contains the latex layer (aloin) between the outer leaf and the inner gel — which is a strong laxative and potential irritant if used topically in quantity. Professional extraction removes this fraction
