Traction Alopecia: The Hair Loss Caused by Your Hairstyle — and How to Reverse It

Tight braids, high ponytails, heavy extensions, and daily buns are creating a silent epidemic of hairline recession across India. Here's what's happening and what can be done.

It begins so gradually that most people don't notice it until it's significant. The hairline at the temples starts to recede slightly. The area behind the ears thins. The part widens imperceptibly over months and years. Fine, fragile hairs appear where there used to be a dense, healthy hairline.

This is traction alopecia — hair loss caused by the sustained mechanical pulling of hair follicles. It is one of the most common and most preventable forms of hair loss in India, particularly among women. And it is caused not by any disease or nutritional deficiency or hormone — but by the hairstyles worn day after day, year after year, often beginning in childhood.

What Is Traction Alopecia and Why Does It Happen?

Hair follicles are anchored in the dermis — the deeper layer of the scalp skin — by a network of connective tissue. This anchoring is strong but not unlimited. Sustained tension applied to the hair shaft transmits force to the follicle. Over time, this chronic tension causes:

The tight juda (bun) worn for professional or formal occasions, the tight two-plaits common in school dress codes, the sleek pulled-back hairstyles favoured in many professional settings — all of these create sustained tension at the hairline and temples that, worn daily for years, causes traction alopecia. School-age girls who wear tight braids as their default hairstyle for years are particularly vulnerable.

Women who use hair extensions, weaves, or clip-ins regularly

Bonded or sewn-in extensions add significant weight to the natural hair. This weight — acting over weeks and months — creates downward traction on the follicles, particularly at the hairline and nape. Clip-in extensions create focal tension at the clip attachment points. Regular, long-term use without adequate rest periods is a significant traction alopecia risk.

Men and women who use tight headbands, hair ties, or clips daily

Early Traction Alopecia: What to Do

Step 1: Stop the traction immediately

The only way to give follicles a chance to recover is to remove the source of tension. This means changing hairstyles — not just styling them more gently. If tight braids are causing the traction, loose styles or no-tension styles are needed during the recovery period.

Wearing a somewhat looser braid, alternating parting, and ensuring the scalp is not tender or sore from the hairstyle are simple adjustments that make a real difference across years of compounding stress.
